California Supreme Court
Day of Decision
on Proposition 8
California Supreme Court
LGBT people and our allies anxiously await the California Supreme Court decision either affirming or rejecting the hateful anti-equality Proposition 8....
....But we won't just wait. Whatever the decision, we must act.
We will organize “Day of Decision” actions that will either:
1) Celebrate a positive decision and attempt to spread its impact
or
2) If the court rules against us, make sure that our angry voices are heard around the the world. Anger for denying an entire group of people their civil rights is perfectly legitimate and appropriate.
To insure our protests, or celebrations, on the day we hear the the prop 8 ruling are most effective,
we must begin to organize right now.
If we organize a "Day of Decision" action in every sizable city, we will send a powerful message that our community will not sit idly by if the hateful Proposition 8 is allowed to stand.
Organizing now will send the message that we no longer accept discrimination against us.

We must be ready.
If the court rules to only uphold the existing same sex marriages, but allows the rest of Prop 8 to stand, it will not be a victory.
If discrimination is written back into the California Constitution, we must go back to the streets.
Sign up to be a Day of Decision organizer to help put together an action for the night the decision is announced.

The Brass Tacks:
What You Can Do
Get together with a few others in your area to organize a Day of Decision action to be held on the evening the California Supreme Court rules on proposition 8. We will have posters, talking points, press releases, email blasts, etc. designed to publicize your event before the Court rules. Once we learn the court's decision, we will provide materials you can blast out on that day for your event that evening. The day before they rule, the court will tell our plaintiffs that their decision will be announced the following day. So we'll have a final 24 hours to Facebook, email etc. our supporters for the event the following night. The key is to begin informing people NOW that there will be an action in your city on the night the Court gives its decision. Explain that the court must rule within 90 days of March 5, when they hear the case. This means a decision at the latest by June 3rd. However, most likely, they can and will rule earlier. So, we must start preparing immediately.
We Have Done This Before
We Can Do It – BETTER – Again Fifty cities mobilized for our "Day of Decision" actions around the landmark 2003 Lawrence v. Texas U.S. Supreme Court decision, well before social networking sites had come onto the scene. A few years earlier, our nationwide StopDrLaura campaign got the world's #2 largest advertiser, Proctor & Gamble, to dump gay-hater Dr. Laura Schlessinger, cutting short the career of what had been the nation's #2 radio hostess (behind Rush Limbaugh). These campaigns were truly volunteer-driven, grassroots efforts. The stakes in California are high – a good decision would help fortify our community against what could be some very difficult years of economic strain and scapegoating. A bad decision will likely inflame the heightened level of violence already recorded against the LGBT community over the past year. Either way, the results in California will be a national issue. Please fill in the form above to become a Day of Decision organizer in your area, so that this time, we are ready to Protest or Celebrate the same day the CA Supreme Court rules. This time, we will not sit passively by. We will be prepared. Robin Tyler Andy Thayer
