Rally in Celebration or Protest at 5:30pm on the Day of the Decision WHAT IS IT? When the CA Supreme Court announces their decision on Proposition 8, we must act! We are calling you to join us for a rally in celebration or protest on the day of the decision. Protests will occur nationwide and our voices will be heard! We hope that we will come together in celebration, but must know that even in celebration we have many more battles to win and need to unite on the day of decision in one loud voice. The California Supreme Court will announce their decision on Proposition 8 (the gay marriage ban) on Tuesday, May 26th. It's important we come together to either celebrate or protest, uniting the community behind the civil rights movement for equality and justice. TAKE ACTION: If the decision is in our favor at Proposal 8 is rejected, we'll take to the streets and celebrate at Bronson Park (we are working on securing snacks, but no promises are made). If Proposal 8 is upheld we will take to the streets in anger and have our voices heard in front of the Federal Building. The march will start at Red Square at Kalamazoo College at 5:30. The stakes in California and Michigan are high – a good decision would help fortify our community against what could be some very difficult years of economic strain and scapegoating. A bad decision would likely inflame the heightened level of violence already recorded against the LGBT community over the past year. Either way, the results in California will be a national issue. We Have Done This Before, and We Can Do It – BETTER – Again. Fifty cities mobilized for our "Day of Decision" actions around the landmark 2003 Lawrence v. Texas U.S. Supreme Court decision well before social networking sites had come onto the scene. A few years earlier, our nationwide StopDrLaura campaign got the world's #2 largest advertiser, Proctor & Gamble, to dump gay-hater Dr. Laura Schlessinger, cutting short the career of what had been the nation's #2 radio hostess (behind Rush Limbaugh). These campaigns were truly volunteer-driven, grassroots efforts. WE MUST BE READY! If the court rules to only uphold the existing same sex marriages, but allows the rest of Prop 8 stand, it will not be a victory. If discrimination is written back into the California Constitution, we must go back to the streets. | |||||
