HATE CRIMES IN SAN DIEGO!

After a gig in Mission Beach on May 14th, 25 year old San Diego musician Rhythm Turner was victim to a brutal attack by a man whose motivations were based in homophobia, leaving Rhythm with two very serious facial fractures and the inability to perform musically. The attacker was arrested for felony assault, but is not currently being charged with a hate crime.

Rhythm needs reconstructive surgery to fix her fractures, but as a full-time student and musician she has no health insurance. If you'd like to help with these costs, please consider a contribution via this paypal link:

Any amount would very much be appreciated!

Also, keep an eye out for information on a benefit/ fundraiser event coming soon. If you'd like to contribute a product or service certificate for the silent auction at this event, please email

Thanks to everyone for their continued support, prayers and well-wishes.

More than 60 people who staged a sit-in at the San Diego County clerk’s office Wednesday were escorted out of the building with citations. Though arrests were threatened, in the end none were made, and the paddy wagon was on the scene just as a precaution. People were escorted from the building by to cheers and applause.

Sara Beth Brooks reached out to The Advocate while sitting on the floor of the county clerk's office, protesting "in support of Michael and Brian, a couple who have twice been denied today a marriage license."

Brooks says people sang and shared memories of Stonewall in support. She says at one point a sheriff threatened to take her phone for trying to snap a photo.

The sheriff threatened that arrests would start at 5 p.m., according to Brooks, though did say that people who weren't willing to be arrested will be allowed to leave the building. That's when Brooks left. "My role was to hold the space outside for those not willing to be arrested," she said.

As they left the building, she said, "people applauded the sheriff. There's some great organizing going on down here in San Diego."
